Part of our Song Kiln Collection, this water cup is inspired by the celadon ware of the Song Dynasty's Imperial Jian Kilns.
Brimming with irresistible mystery, this impeccably rendered Song Dynasty Jian-style water cup is a one-of-a-kind masterpiece from Xu Chun Tian, son of nationally acclaimed Taiwanese ceramicist, Xu De Jia.
Similar in shape to previous water cups we've offered, but significantly larger in size, this impressive piece makes a stunning personal drinking vessel for enjoying tea, water, or any beverage of your choice.
Originally crafted in Jianyang (just south of the Wuyi Mountains, in China's Fujian Province) from the Song Dynasty until the Ming Dynasty, Jian ware employed a unique iron-based glaze that, when fired at high temperature, produced the unique surface patterns for which this style is known.
This particular vessel (glazed in the classic "hares fur" style) is a stunning example of modern Jian ware. Underpinned by a deep, scintillating black, this unique glaze is punctuated by a spray of patterning in a range of hues, from dark brown and amber to metallic silver.
Beyond its instantly captivating beauty, this Jian Kiln Water Cup is wonderfully ergonomic, making it an absolute pleasure to use. A gently bowed shape forms to the contours of the hand, while a pleasant weight creates fantastic presence when held. The artist's stamp is debossed on the underside of the foot.
Please note that this is a handmade item, and every cup will vary slightly in glaze, shape, dimensions, and volume.
