History: Origins of Tea
Tea is one of the oldest beverages in the world. 3,000 years of legend and history culminate in the rich and complex tea culture we know today. Both the tea plant and the tradition of crafting and drinking tea originated in China. TheyΒ held a firm monopoly on the tea market until the Opium Wars of the 1800's.
While much of this history is shrouded in myth, it is generally accepted that the people of southeastern China have been consuming tea leaves since prehistoric times. Recent research has revealed that leaves of the tea plant were consumed by emperors of the Han Dynasty as early as the 2nd Century BC.
