Though invented in Tang/Song Dynasty China, matcha has become known worldwide as the foundation of the Japanese Tea Ceremony and the pinnacle of Japan's tea culture. Traditional Japanese matcha is crafted by grinding shade-grown green tea leaves (known as tencha) in a stone mill to create a superfine powder. The shade-growing process forces the tea plants to boost production of chlorophyll, theanine, and many other compounds to cope with the lack of sunlight. The result is an intensely vegetal and umami flavor with a vibrant green color.

Sourced directly from Japan, our Japanese Matcha powder is incredibly versatile. Enjoy it whisked in one of our tea bowls in the traditional style; mix it with milk for a matcha late; pour it over ice cream for a matcha affogato; enjoy it cold brewed; or add it to your baking for a unique and captivating treat.

Because you are consuming the entire tea leaf when you drink it (rather than just infusing the leaves in water, as with Chinese-style tea), matcha has the highest levels of caffeine and antioxidants of any tea type. A fair warning to those with caffeine-sensitivity: matcha packs a punch!

Our Japanese Matcha comes sealed in a 50g bag (enough for roughly 25 servings) placed inside our slate gray tea canister. Complete your setup with a matcha whiskwhisk holder, and tea bowl.
