Ru Kiln Gaiwan: Series 1

$188.00

Ru Kiln Gaiwan: Series 1

  • Strikingly modern in its aesthetic, this gaiwan is inspired by the Imperial Ru Kilns of China's Song Dynasty. Crafted by nationally acclaimed Taiwanese master ceramicist Xu De Jia, this piece features the artist's signature blue-green glaze on a white clay body. Our Ru Kiln Gaiwan retains heat better than porcelain or glass, making it ideal for teas that require a higher temperature or longer infusion time.

Due to natural variations in kilning temperature and cooling rates, our current Ru Kiln Gaiwans have an unbroken glaze, without the craquelure found in many of our other celadon pieces.

Please note that this is a handmade item, and every gaiwan will vary slightly in glaze, shape, dimensions, and volume.

All volumes are measured to the brim. Functional volume may vary.

  • Though not how you'll see it done in China, our favorite and most secure way to hold the gaiwan is by placing two fingers of each hand underneath the plate, and using your thumbs to hold the top of the knob and secure the lid. Rotate your thumbs toward your body, straining the leaves with the lid while decanting the liquid.
