One of two paper porcelain gaiwans we commissioned from Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province. Hand-crafted of thin high-fired porcelain.
A sibling to the wider bodied Summer gaiwan, the Spring version is tall, with slightly more angular lines. The silhouette is very traditional, with a very gradual outward flare. The drop of the brewing vessel angles abruptly and almost horizontally towards the foot, which nestles perfectly into the dish beneath.
This gaiwan is perfect for green and white tea, but can be used to brew any kind of tea.
All volumes are measured to the brim. Functional volume may vary.
volume 7.4 oz/220 ml • height 3.75" • diameter 3.5"
Though not how you'll see it done in China, our favorite and most secure way to hold the gaiwan is by placing two fingers of each hand underneath the plate, and using your thumbs to hold the top of the knob and secure the lid. Rotate your thumbs toward your body, straining the leaves with the lid while decanting the liquid.
