Our Eastern Beauty is a totally unique crop of aphid bitten black tea we found this year. This fifth generation tea farm near the top of Alishan set aside this rare batch of leaves to craft into a black tea. The result is exceptional due to both slow growth and the unusual crafting style, which pushes oxidation further than what is typical for this famed variety.

Similar to our Sun Moon Lake Formosa Red varieties, this black tea was crafted by allowing the leaves of an oolong variety to fully oxidize before a traditional roast. This rare crop combines the characteristics of black teas with those of oolong tea varieties from Taiwan.

The aphid bites triggers a natural self-defense mechanism in the tea, making it a mi xiang ("honey fragrance") harvest. This tea is a captivating balance of fruity and rich, with aromatic notes of peach, apricot, and citrus atop a honeyed finish and round, creamy mouth feel.

  • Brewing Guide

Our Eastern Beauty combines the characteristics of black teas with those of oolong tea variety from Taiwan, meaning they are brewed in a manner that is different from most black teas or oolong teas.

To accentuate the aromatics of this tea, we recommend a slightly lower temperature brew at 195 degrees. Steep time should be 1 minute for the initial brew. While this method does not create a deep complex tea, it does make for a smoother and thicker mouth feel infusion that is both sweet and floral.
